What is a hidden premise, and how do I recognize it?

A hidden premise is an unspoken assumption an argument quietly relies on so its conclusion feels forced. You recognize it by sentences that jump ("So you have to do X," "That settles it") where a necessary middle step is never stated. Agree with the conclusion and you've silently agreed to the buried assumption too.

How to respond

    Make the jump visible: "For that to follow, X would have to be true. Is it?" The unspoken assumption becomes negotiable.

    Separate conclusion from premise: you can agree with the goal and still reject the buried assumption ("therefore today").

    Ask for the missing step: "How do you get from A to B?" If there's no bridge, the argument doesn't hold.

How is this different from an unsupported claim?

An unsupported claim is stated, just without a source. A hidden premise is never stated at all: it sits inside the argument as a precondition, which is exactly why it rarely gets checked.

Is a hidden premise always manipulation?
